A quick and easy sugar-free agua fresca made with fresh watermelon, basil, lime juice, and water. This refreshing drink is perfect for hot days and offers a natural, clean flavor without any added sugars.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (about 600 grams) cubed seedless watermelon
  • 1012 fresh basil leaves
  • Juice of 1 medium lime (about 2 tablespoons or 30 ml)
  • 1 to 1 ½ cups (240360 ml) cold water
  • Ice cubes (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Cut about 4 cups (600 grams) of seedless watermelon into cubes and chill if desired.
  2. Place the watermelon cubes and 10-12 fresh basil leaves into a blender. Tear basil leaves slightly to release flavor.
  3. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until smooth and vibrant pink.
  4. Pour the blended mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a pitcher, pressing the pulp to extract juice (optional).
  5. Stir in the juice of 1 lime and 1 to 1 ½ cups cold water, adjusting water amount to taste.
  6. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or serve immediately over ice cubes.
  7. Optional: Muddle extra basil leaves in the glass before pouring for a stronger herbal flavor.

Notes

Do not over-blend basil to avoid bitterness. Straining is optional but recommended for a smooth texture. Adjust water amount based on watermelon sweetness. For a more intense basil flavor, muddle extra leaves in the glass. Store leftovers refrigerated up to 2 days; avoid freezing to preserve basil freshness.
