A quick and easy taco dip with a spooky spiderweb pattern, perfect for Halloween parties, game days, or weeknight dinners. Ready in 20 minutes with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (16 oz) refried beans
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup black olives, sliced
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions
  • Tortilla chips for serving

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef (5 minutes): Place your skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef. Break it up with your spatula as it cooks, stirring occasionally. You want it browned and crumbly—about 5 minutes. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Season the beef (2 minutes): Reduce the heat to low and sprinkle the taco seasoning over the cooked beef. Add 1/4 cup of water. Stir until the seasoning is fully dissolved and the beef is coated. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  3. Prepare the base (2 minutes): Spread the refried beans evenly across the bottom of your pie plate. Use the back of a spoon to smooth it out. If the beans are stiff, microwave them for 20 seconds to make them easier to spread.
  4. Add the beef layer (1 minute): Spoon the seasoned ground beef over the refried beans. Spread it gently with your spatula so it covers the entire bean layer. Press down lightly so it sticks.
  5. Layer the cheese (2 minutes): Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses evenly over the beef.
  6. Create the spiderweb pattern (3 minutes): Spoon the sour cream into a small bowl and stir it until it’s smooth. If it’s too thick to spread, add a teaspoon of milk to thin it slightly. Dollop the sour cream in a circle in the center of the cheese layer. Then, using the back of your spoon, spread it outward in a spiral pattern. Now take your butter knife and drag it from the center of the spiral outward to the edge, like you’re drawing spokes on a wheel. Space them about an inch apart. Repeat all…
  7. Add the toppings (2 minutes): Sprinkle the diced tomatoes, sliced black olives, and green onions over the top of the web. Arrange a few olives to look like spiders if desired.
  8. Optional: Broil the cheese (2 minutes): If you want that bubbly, golden cheese finish, pop the assembled dip under the broiler for 1-2 minutes. Watch it closely.
  9. Serve immediately: Place the pie plate on a serving platter and surround it with tortilla chips.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, skip the ground beef and add a second can of refried beans. For dairy-free, use vegan sour cream and shredded vegan cheese. Full-fat sour cream is recommended for the best spiderweb pattern. The dip can be assembled (minus sour cream web and toppings) up to 24 hours in advance.
