A simple, festive layered trifle featuring angel food cake, fresh strawberries and blueberries, and whipped cream, perfect for summer parties and patriotic celebrations.

Ingredients

  • Angel Food Cake (store-bought or homemade, cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • Fresh Strawberries (hulled and sliced)
  • Fresh Blueberries
  • Granulated Sugar (2 tablespoons for macerating berries)
  • Heavy Whipping Cream (2 cups, cold)
  • Vanilla Extract (1 teaspoon)
  • Cream Cheese (4 ounces, softened, optional)
  • Powdered Sugar (3 tablespoons)
  • Blueberries for Garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the strawberries and blueberries gently under cold water. Hull and slice the strawberries into bite-sized pieces. Place the berries in a bowl, sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, and toss gently to combine. Let them sit at room temperature for 10 minutes to macerate.
  2. Cut the angel food cake into roughly 1-inch cubes using a sharp knife. Be gentle to keep the cubes intact. Set aside.
  3. In a chilled large bowl, pour 2 cups of cold heavy whipping cream. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Using an electric mixer or whisk, beat the cream until soft peaks form. Optionally, blend in 4 ounces of softened cream cheese before whipping for a tangy twist.
  4. In a trifle bowl, start with a layer of angel food cake cubes (about one-third of the total). Spoon a layer of macerated strawberries over the cake, followed by a generous dollop of whipped cream. Add a layer of blueberries, then repeat the layers once or twice more until ingredients are used or bowl is filled.
  5. Top the final layer with a few fresh blueberries and strawberry slices for garnish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld and cake soak up berry juices without getting soggy.

Notes

Use cold cream for better whipping results. Macerate berries to enhance sweetness and prevent dryness. Layer gently to avoid crushing the cake. Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Fresh berries are preferred over frozen for best texture. Optional cream cheese adds tanginess. Variations include gluten-free cake or dairy-free coconut cream.
