A simple, satisfying ground beef dinner designed to please picky eaters with balanced, familiar flavors and a juicy texture. Ready in under 30 minutes, it’s perfect for busy weeknights and adaptable to various dietary needs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef, preferably 80/20
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped (optional; substitute with onion powder if disliked)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup (240ml) tomato sauce (no-sugar-added recommended)
  • ½ cup (120ml) beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: up to ½ cup finely grated carrot or zucchini
  • Cooked rice or pasta, to serve

Instructions

  1. Heat the skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Warm until shimmering, about 1 minute.
  2. Add finely chopped onion (if using) and sauté for 3–4 minutes until translucent and soft. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn.
  3. Add 1 pound ground beef to the pan. Break it up with a spoon or spatula and cook for 6–8 minutes until no longer pink, stirring occasionally until some bits are golden brown.
  4. If using, stir in grated carrot or zucchini and cook for 2 minutes to soften.
  5. Stir in dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, and pepper to taste. Add Worcestershire sauce and mix well.
  6. Pour in tomato sauce and beef broth. Stir to combine; the mixture should be saucy but not soupy. Add a splash more broth if too thick.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer gently for 10 minutes, stirring once or twice to meld flavors and keep beef juicy.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. The beef should be tender and the sauce slightly thickened.
  9. Serve warm over cooked rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan to allow proper browning. Use medium-high heat for flavor development. Cover pan during simmering to keep beef juicy. Substitute onion with onion powder if disliked by kids. Finely grate veggies to sneak in nutrition without affecting texture. Adjust seasoning gradually and avoid over-stirring to develop a nice crust. This recipe freezes well for up to 3 months.
