Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) good quality apple cider (unfiltered, cloudy)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) apple brandy or Calvados
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) maple syrup or honey
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • 34 whole cloves
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 23 small apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1 large orange, thinly sliced into half-moons
  • 1/2 cup (about 60g) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • Sparkling water or ginger ale (for serving, optional)
  • Ice (for serving)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs or extra cinnamon sticks (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Fruit: Wash apples and orange. Thinly slice apples (no need to peel). Slice orange into thin rounds, then cut each round in half to make half-moons. Measure out cranberries. If using fresh ginger, peel and slice into thin coins.
  2. Build the Flavor Base: In a large pitcher, combine apple cider, apple brandy, maple syrup (or honey), and fresh lemon juice. Stir well until the sweetener is fully dissolved.
  3. Add the Wine & Spices: Pour in the entire bottle of white wine. Add cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, and sliced ginger. Give it another gentle stir.
  4. Add the Fruit: Gently add sliced apples, orange half-moons, and cranberries to the pitcher. Use a spoon to push them down into the liquid.
  5. Refrigerate: Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but overnight (12-24 hours) is best.
  6. Serve: When ready to serve, fill glasses or a punch bowl with ice. Give the sangria a final gentle stir. Pour over ice, making sure to include some of the boozy fruit in each glass. If desired, top off each glass with a splash of sparkling water or ginger ale. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig or an extra cinnamon stick.

Notes

Don’t skip the lemon juice! It brightens the flavors and prevents the apples from browning. The sangria tastes best when made a day ahead. For a spooky presentation, add a few drops of black food coloring before serving. Use a dry white wine to avoid a syrupy result.
