A quick and thoughtful homemade cookie mix gift layered in a mason jar, perfect for teachers and last-minute presents. The mix combines simple pantry ingredients for classic soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup packed (165g) brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional add-ins: chopped nuts, white chocolate chips, or dried cranberries
  • For baking (not in jar): 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sifted all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt to evenly distribute leavening agents.
  2. Add granulated sugar and packed brown sugar to the bowl and stir to combine well until uniform.
  3. Using a spoon or funnel, carefully layer the flour-sugar mixture into a quart-size mason jar, pressing down lightly to minimize air gaps.
  4. Pour semi-sweet chocolate chips on top of the dry mix. If using optional nuts or dried fruit, sprinkle a layer now.
  5. Seal the jar lid tightly. Tie a ribbon around the neck and attach a tag with baking instructions.
  6. On the tag, include: Add 1 cup softened unsalted butter, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1-to-1 gluten-free blend. For dairy-free or vegan, use vegan butter and a flax egg. When layering, gently tamp each layer to keep the jar compact and visually appealing. Remind recipients to cream butter and sugars first before adding egg and vanilla for best cookie texture. Baking times may vary; watch cookies closely after 9 minutes.
