A simple yet indulgent layered dessert featuring fudgy brownies, silky chocolate pudding, and fluffy whipped cream, perfect for any occasion and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 batch of homemade or store-bought brownies, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups (480 ml) prepared chocolate pudding (homemade or instant)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) heavy whipping cream, chilled, whipped to soft peaks (or store-bought whipped topping)
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (optional, to sweeten whipped cream)
  • Optional: splash of coffee or espresso powder in pudding for mocha twist
  • Optional: handful of chopped nuts for crunch
  • Optional: fresh berries like raspberries or strawberries for layering
  • Optional dairy-free substitutions: coconut cream for heavy cream and dairy-free chocolate pudding

Instructions

  1. Prepare the brownies: bake your favorite brownie recipe or use store-bought. Once cooled, cut into 1-inch cubes. This takes about 15-20 minutes if baking, or 5 minutes if pre-made.
  2. Make the chocolate pudding: prepare instant pudding according to package instructions and chill until thickened (around 5 minutes), or cool homemade pudding to room temperature.
  3. Whip the cream: pour 2 cups of cold heavy cream into a chilled bowl. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons sugar if desired. Beat on medium-high speed until soft peaks form (3-5 minutes). Avoid overwhipping.
  4. Layer the trifle: in a trifle bowl or clear dish, start with a layer of brownie cubes (about one-third of total). Spoon a generous layer of chocolate pudding over brownies, smoothing gently.
  5. Add whipped cream: spread a layer of whipped cream over pudding, using about one-third of total whipped cream.
  6. Repeat layers two more times: brownies, pudding, whipped cream, ending with a final whipped cream layer on top.
  7. Garnish with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or berries.
  8. Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld and brownies to soften.

Notes

Use fudgy brownies for best texture. Whip cream to soft peaks to avoid heaviness. Chill at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor and texture. For dairy-free, substitute coconut cream and dairy-free pudding. Optional coffee or espresso powder enhances chocolate flavor. Handle layers gently to keep them distinct.
