Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) dry ranch dressing mix
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup pecans, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon milk

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take cream cheese out of fridge at least 30 minutes before starting. If in a hurry, cut into cubes and let sit for 15 minutes. Do not microwave.
  2. Mix the base: In a large mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, ranch dressing mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until fully combined and smooth. Scrape down sides of bowl at least once.
  3. Chill the mixture: Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes until firm enough to shape.
  4. Toast the pecans: While mixture chills, heat a small skillet over medium heat. Add chopped pecans and stir constantly for 3-4 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden. Set aside to cool completely.
  5. Shape the cheese ball: Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on counter. Scoop chilled cheese mixture onto center of plastic wrap. Use wrap to help shape into a smooth, round ball. Refrigerate wrapped ball for another 30 minutes to firm up.
  6. Roll in pecans: Once ball is firm, unwrap and roll gently in toasted pecans. Press pecans into surface with hands if needed, ensuring entire ball is covered.
  7. Create the spiderweb: Place cheese ball on serving plate. Mix 2 tablespoons sour cream with 1 teaspoon milk until thin enough to drizzle. Using a toothpick or paring knife, start at top of ball and drag a thin line of sour cream mixture down to bottom. Repeat 6-8 times around ball. Then, starting at top again, drag a toothpick through each line in a curved arc to create web pattern.
  8. Chill again (optional but recommended): Refrigerate finished cheese ball for 15-20 minutes before serving to set web pattern and make slicing easier.

Notes

Don’t skip the chilling steps – they are crucial for shaping. Use full-fat cream cheese for best texture. Toast pecans for enhanced flavor. Shred your own cheese for smoother texture. Can be made up to 3 days in advance (add pecan coating and web pattern on serving day). Freezes well before adding pecan coating.
