Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (330g)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (7g)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk, warmed (180ml; dairy-free is fine)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (42g)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (180g)
  • 34 tablespoons whole milk or cream (45–60ml)
  • Food coloring gels (pink, red, white)
  • Assorted sprinkles (hearts, pearls, jimmies, Valentine’s mixes)
  • Edible glitter or luster dust (optional)
  • Freeze-dried strawberries, crushed (optional)
  • Mini chocolate chips or white chocolate curls (optional)
  • Chocolate-covered strawberries
  • Marshmallows (heart shaped if possible)
  • Fresh raspberries or sliced strawberries
  • Candy hearts, pink M&Ms, or jelly beans
  • Fresh edible flowers (roses, pansies; optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour, instant yeast, and sugar.
  2. Gently warm milk until just warm to the touch (about 110°F). Pour into dry ingredients.
  3. Add salt, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead 6–8 minutes until smooth and stretchy, adding flour a tablespoon at a time if too sticky.
  5. Cover bowl with a towel and let rise in a warm spot for 60–90 minutes, until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough. Roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/2 inch thick.
  7. Cut out heart shapes with a cutter (about 3 inches wide), rerolling scraps as needed (makes 12–15 donuts).
  8. Place hearts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  9. For baked donuts: Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake 8–10 minutes until lightly golden and soft.
  10. For fried donuts: Heat 2 inches oil to 350°F. Fry donuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  11. While donuts cool slightly, whisk powdered sugar with milk or cream to make a smooth glaze. Divide and tint with food coloring as desired.
  12. Dip each donut top-down in glaze, let excess drip off, and set on a cooling rack. Decorate immediately with sprinkles, glitter, or toppings.
  13. On a large board or tray, arrange donuts in overlapping layers. Fill gaps with chocolate-covered strawberries, marshmallows, fruit, candies, and edible flowers.
  14. Serve immediately, or cover loosely with plastic wrap until party time.

Notes

Chill shaped donuts for 10 minutes before baking or frying for cleaner shapes. Make dough the night before for easy prep. Let guests decorate their own donuts for a fun party activity. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 baking blend; for vegan, use plant-based milk, butter, and a flax egg. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze unglazed donuts for up to 2 months.
