Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sliced pepperoni (or turkey pepperoni)
  • 1/4 cup diced bell peppers (red or yellow)
  • 1/4 cup sliced black olives
  • 2 tbsp chopped red onion
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
  • Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Cooked sausage or vegan sausage crumbles (optional)
  • Spinach, arugula, or other leafy greens (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, instant yeast, sugar, salt, and garlic powder (if using).
  2. Pour in warm water and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead by hand for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if sticky, or a splash of water if dry.
  4. Cover the bowl with a towel and let rest for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F. Place pizza stone in oven if using.
  6. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, flatten each piece into a 5-6 inch circle. Pinch the bottom to form a point and indent the top center to make a heart shape. Smooth edges as needed.
  8. Transfer each heart to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  9. Spread 2 tbsp pizza sauce on each heart, leaving a 1/2 inch border.
  10. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning.
  11. Top with about 1/3 cup mozzarella and a sprinkle of Parmesan.
  12. Add desired toppings: pepperoni, bell peppers, olives, onion, etc.
  13. Brush crust edges with olive oil.
  14. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is bubbling (check at 10 minutes for softer crust).
  15. Remove from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes.
  16. Garnish with fresh basil leaves. Slice and serve.

Notes

Don’t overwork the dough; use parchment for easy shaping and cleanup. Rotate the pan halfway through baking for even browning. Let pizzas rest a few minutes before slicing. Dough can be made ahead and refrigerated up to 24 hours. Easily adapted for gluten-free, vegan, or other dietary needs.
